NEWSLETTER II - 2007

Celebrating famous Norwegians 2007 – 2008

The Concert in Wigmore Hall in November is a fitting end to this year’s Grieg celebrations.

In 2008 we mark the 100th anniversary of one of Norway’s “Four Greats” from “The Age of the Poets” as they say in Norway. Jonas Lie like the three others in this group, Ibsen, Bjørnson and Kielland, described Norwegian society during their life time.  Lie’s best known book, “Familien på Gilje”, is a stinging social critique, while managing to be both tragic and humorous in its description of the Gilje family and their fate.

WINTER 2007 - 08

PROGRAMME DETAILS

Thursday 27 September, PowerPoint presentation/talk; “How Women Changed Politics in Norway” by Irene Garland.

Annual comparative statistics from the United Nations indicate that Norway is the best country in the world for women. Given that Norwegian women during the 19th Century seem to have experienced the same conditions as those in the UK, this lecture tries to answer questions of WHEN and HOW this change took place by looking at women’s entry into politics. It also looks at how this has impacted on policies in Norway and how it has led to changes not only in women’s  lives but also in social attitudes and social arrangements.

Venue: Royal Norwegian Embassy, 25 Belgrave Square. Please note that the meeting will begin at 7.30 pm. Refreshments will be served from 6.45.(please pay on the day). Booking slip at the end of the Newsletter.
