PROGRAMME DETAILS 2011

Thursday 27 January, 6.15 pm for 7 pm.:  Film “The Kautokeino Rebellion” Norwegian Sami director Nils Gaup, who directed the Oscar-nominated Pathfinder now returns with a film closer to home and his own family history; The Kautokeino Rebellion.  The film recounts the story of the Sami rebellion against the Norwegians during the winter of 1852. This is one of the few violent clashes between the two groups and started off with a debt for consumed liquor that finally left several dead, including the Norwegian police chief and a local merchant. The rebellion led to the execution of one of Gaup's own forefathers.  Gaup has been working on the film for over ten years. "Until recently the uprising was a taboo subject among the population in Kautokeino; still it has inspired five novels, two operas, one symphony, and several documentaries”. The Kautokeino-born director explained in an interview.  English subtitles – length 1 h 36 min.

Thursday 24 February, 6.15 pm for 7 pm. Film “Ole Bull”

The violinist Ole Bull, was Norway's first superstar; He played on the top of the Great Pyramid of Giza, founded the first Norwegian theatre and his own state in America, and is probably the only Norwegian who has sold his bath water in perfume bottles to his many fans. He was the violin king who seduced both women and his audience, while his children and wife were neglected.  Ole Bull was the great idol of his times, a burning nationalist and an icon in the struggle for making Norway an independent nation.  It is no exaggeration to say that Ole Bull lived a more adventurous life than any other Norwegian has done before or since. He toured almost continuously for fifty years, one year he managed to play 274 concerts as he travelled around Europe in a horse-drawn carriage. English subtitles – length 1 h 36 min.

Thursday 24 March, 6.45 pm for 7.30 pm. “The painters Oda and Christian Krogh and their circle 1880-1920” by Dr Marie Wells.

Dr Wells, well known to ANS regulars, has now retired from UCL where she taught Norwegian Literature. This has given her more time to devote to her interest in the arts which is reflected in this talk about the Krogh’s.

Oda and Christian Krogh were at the centre of a radical group known as Kristiania Bohêmen who scandalised the good citizens of the capital both with their behaviour and their art in the 1880s. This illustrated talk will set the painters in the context of their day and also include the work of their son Per Krogh, who became an eminent mural painter who was commissioned to decorate the UNs Security Council Chamber. He is also recognised as a painter on canvas.

April 14, 6.15 pm for 7 pm,  Annual General Meeting

The accounts for 2010 will be presented and discussed, so members are urged to attend.  After the conclusion of the AGM there will be a talk based on the book “Haakon Lie, Denis Healey and the making of an Anglo-Norwegian special relationship, 1945-1951” by its author Tony Insall.

The book analyses the remarkably close relationship between the British and Norwegian Labour parties and two of their leaders, Haakon Lie and Denis Healey, during the immediate post-war period.  It will explore the extent of party co-operation in disseminating anti-communist propaganda produced by the Information Research Department (IRD) of the Foreign Office in London, and a separate chapter looks at the history of IRD.  The book is largely based on unpublished material from over ten different archives in Britain, Norway, the Netherlands and Russia and also incorporates material released at the request of the author under the Freedom of Information Act in Britain.
