NEWSLETTER AND PROGRAMME FOR

AUTUMN - WINTER 2009

In an attempt at reducing costs and streamlining the delivery of the Review and the Newsletter, we have over the past year changed our printers. For the last Newsletter we tried out including it as a centre pull out, but found that there were some problems with the lay-out. This time, we are back to producing and distributing the Newsletter separately.

INTERNET and WEB-SITE

Members who have access to the Internet can find all programme information there (www.anglo-norse.org.uk) and those with e-mail can book by his method on anglonorse@yahoo.co.uk

SUBSCRIPTIONS – BANKERS ORDERS

An increase in subscriptions were voted through at the last AGM, please see Minutes sent to each member, and the new rates are given on the enclosed form. Those who pay their subscriptions by Bankers Orders are reminded that they need to submit a new form.

Thursday 12 November: Finnmark 2007 Expedition; presentation by Adam Munthe

Adam Munthe has travelled in the Scandinavian Arctic since childhood, and recently led an expedition, backed by the RGS, to research Sámi reindeer-herders traditional knowledge and techniques for adapting to climate change. He is also chairman of a charity trust that develops inspirational activities with young people (particularly those from socially and financially fragile backgrounds) aimed at furthering their understanding of the world they live in, and competence to live in that world in a sustainable way.

The talk will feature a short film (15 minutes) on the Finnmark 2007 dog-sledding expedition investigating nomadic Sámi attitudes to climate change.

Thursday 28 January 2010; Talk by Dr Marie Wells about Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.

During his life-time Bjørnson was considered a more important cultural figure in Norway than his close contemporary Ibsen. In Norway he is still loved and remembered as the author of the ‘bondefortellinger’ (peasant stories), and the songs that are to be found in them. But as a literary figure, awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1903, a journalist, a theatre director and a political activist his influence ranged much further, and in the 1870s and 1880s when he was playing a leading role in the cultural debates of the day, one could almost say that when BB sneezed, the whole nation knew about it! This talk will aim to highlight some of Bjørnson’s contributions to Norwegian cultural life and explain why his life and work are still worth celebrating one hundred years after his death.
