PROGRAMME DETAILS 2010

Thursday 28 January: Illustrated talk by Dr Marie Wells about Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. During his life-time Bjørnson was considered a more important cultural figure in Norway than his close contemporary Ibsen. In Norway he is still loved and remembered as the author of the ‘bondefortellinger’ (peasant stories), and the songs that are to be found in them. But as a literary figure, awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1903, a journalist, a theatre director and a political activist his influence ranged much further, and in the 1870s and 1880s when he was playing a leading role in the cultural debates of the day, one could almost say that when BB sneezed, the whole nation knew about it! This talk will aim to highlight some of Bjørnson’s contributions to Norwegian cultural life and explain why his life and work are still worth celebrating one hundred years after his death. A colourful hand-out and ‘souvenir’ copy of ‘Faderen’ (in English translation) will be given to member present.

Thursday 18 February, 12.00 noon, Norwegian Seaman’s Church, 1.St.Olav's Square Albion Street, Rotherhithe, London SE16 7JB

For this meeting we are teaming up with the Women’s Group at the Norwegian Church. The meeting will start with open-style sandwiches and coffee followed by a talk focusing on the stories behind religious festivals now seen as part of Norwegian Culture. In February “Fastelavn” is celebrated. This is the holiday before Lent, marking the fast leading up to Easter. In many traditions carnivals are arranged before the start of Lent providing a period of merriment and feasting before the severity of Lent. Fastelavn is part of that tradition. Pastor Holt will look at the many stories and the different ideas that underpin the Norwegian traditions of Fastelavn and Lent.

Paid up ANS members are free, guests will pay £ 5 on the day as a contribution towards the catering.

Thursday 25 March, 6.15 pm for 7 pm. We will be showing the Norwegian film Max Manus (English title: Man of War) from 2008. The film follows Max Manus’ life from the Winter Wars, through to WWII and peace in 1945. It is based on Manus’s own book combined with other accounts and historical documents and stays largely historically accurate. However, it omits some events, and moves some of the supporting characters. The film's première was attended by King Harald V, and the reception from critics was largely positive. Max Manus sparked a public debate about the role of the Norwegian resistance movement during the German occupation.

Length: 118 min – English subtitles

April 29, 6.15 pm for 7 pm,  Annual General Meeting

The accounts for 2009 will be presented and discussed, so members are urged to attend.  After the conclusion of the AGM there will be a presentation/talk by John Birch about Norwegian Manor Houses. John Birch is a longstanding member of ANS, he has worked as a journalist at the Financial Times and it the author of “Vikings in London”. In this talk he will be drawing on knowledge gained working on a project for a book to form part of a series on castles and manor houses, which had already included Sweden and Portugal. Some 30 major houses were to be featured in the Norwegian publication. Regrettably the Italian star photographer never got to Norway, and the book was not completed.

Musical Evening, 27 May, Ambassador’s Residence.

Once again the Society has been invited to enjoy the generous hospitality of H.E. the Norwegian Ambassador and his wife, Mrs. Berit Lindstrøm. We will start with pre-concert drinks at 6.00 pm for 6.15 pm and the concert is followed by a buffet reception lasting till 8.30 pm. We are asking members to contribute £ 10 per person, which is not refundable, towards the cost of the concert.

Venue: 10 Palace Green, London W8.

Thursday 30 September, 6.45 for 7.30 pm: Talk by David Redvaldsen; The Norwegian Labour Party and its British Counterpart between the Wars.

At the conclusion of WW2, elections were held across Europe and only in two countries did Labour win outright: Britain and Norway. This presentation will consider how the two parties prepared for government in the 1930s. It will show how they alternated between radicalism and moderation, each in turn choosing one or the other. Both parties believed that the key to victory lay in appealing to the people of the countryside. We will discuss whether they were right or wrong in this belief.
