NEWSLETTER I - 2008

CAROL SERVICE

Many thanks to those who turned up to help with the Carol Service both at the door, in the kitchen, with laying the tables and serving the coffee as well as to Arthur Dixon for his lovely Kransekake.

CONTINUITY  AND  CHANGE  IN  2008

While we continue with events to mark famous Norwegians with our Literature Evening in January, this year we are also introducing two meetings taking place during the day.  This in response to requests from some of our members who find it difficult to travel home in the evening.  We are testing how popular and widespread interest for daytime arrangements are and will be happy to receive feedback from members.

COSCAN MEMBERSHIP

COSCAN who last year launched individual membership for those interested, have now got their web-site up and running. Their address is www.coscan.co.uk.   There is a link from our home page.

10 % reduction on DFDS for ANS members

Please also remember that through Anglo Norse’s Membership of COSCAN our members benefit from a 10% discount on all DFDS’s ferries.

Booking reference is required and can be obtained from the Secretary on 0208 452 4843.

WINTER - SPRING 2008

PROGRAMME DETAILS

Thursday 31 January will be the first meeting of the New Year, when Dr. Marie Wells will present Jonas Lie and his book, “Familien på Gilje”. Jonas Lie,  who died in 1908 was one of the four great Norwegian authors dominating the 19th Century in Norway. “Familien på Gilje” is Lie’s best known book and it describes a middle class family living in the Norwegian country side. While being a social critique it manages to be both tragic and humorous.

Venue: Royal Norwegian Embassy, 25 Belgrave Square at 6.45 for 7.30 pm.  Refreshments will be served (please pay on the day).

Thursday  21 February; “The Post-War Sami Movment in Norway” Dr. Ingrid Schild

In 1987, the Norwegian Government passed the Sami Law, which protected the interests of the Norwegian Sami as an ethnic group and provided for the establishment of the Norwegian Sami Parliament.  The talk, accompanied by slides, will trace the events leading up to the establishment of the Parliament and show how it exacerbated divisions between Sami ethnopolitical organisations.

Ingrid Schild is a lecturer in sociology at the University of Umeå, Sweden.  She wrote about the Sami Parliament whilst a student at the Scott Polar Research Institute in Cambridge, having lived and worked in Karasjok.  Her more recent research interests are in the sociology of science, most notably a study of international collaboration in polar research.

Venue: Royal Norwegian Embassy, 25, Belgrave Square at 6.45 for 7.30pm Refreshments will be served (please pay on the day).

Thursday 6 March; Trip to Leeds Castle by coach from The Norwegian Seamen’s Church, 1 Albion Street, Rotherhithe, (nearest underground Canada Waters), and returning from Leeds Castle car park at 15.30 pm. Approx.  Travel time is 1 hour.

Meet at 10.30 am with dep. 11.00 am, arriving back in Rotherhithe at about 16.30 pm. The cost of the trip including travel and entry to the Castle, the Dog Collar Museum, the Aviary and the Garden is £ 22.75 per person. Visitors will be able to walk round at their own pace, but it is recommended to hire an Audio Tour which costs £ 2.25 extra and must be booked at the same time as the visitor’s ticket.

The Castle also offers a Coffee Table Guide Book at £ 4.00.  However, if the Audio Tour and the Guide Book is ordered together the cost for both is £ 5.00.

Thursday 17 April. Annual General Meeting.

AGM: The accounts for 2006 will be presented and discussed, so members are urged to attend.

After the conclusion of the AGM John Birch will speak on "What happened to Norwegian neutrality?" John's grandfather, general Holtfodt, was responsible as Minister of Defence for maintaining Norway's neutrality during the First World War and became chief of the Norwegian armed forces. One of his junior officers was Vidkun Quisling, who acted as Defence Minister and then as head of the Second World War pro-German government. Armed with some original insights gleaned from his Norwegian family, John looks at aspects of Norway's defence and foreign policy from the dissolution of the union with Sweden in 1905 to its post-war membership of NATO.

Venue: Royal Norwegian Embassy, 25 Belgrave Square. Please note that the meeting will begin at 7.00 PM. Refreshments will be served from 6.15.(please pay on the day).

Thursday 8 May, Musical Evening.

Once again the Society has been invited to enjoy the generous hospitality of H.E. the Norwegian Ambassador and his lovely wife, Berit.

We will start with pre-concert drinks at 6.15 pm for 6.45 and the concert is followed by a buffet reception lasting till 8.30 pm.

We are asking members to contribute £ 10 per person, which is not refundable, towards the cost of the concert.
