Rolf Christophersen

Hon. Vice President

Business man Rolf Christophersen was born in London in 1921 of Norwegian parents. He has been involved in the Anglo Norwegian scene since carrying the Norwegian flag for the opening of the current Norwegian Church and Seaman's Mission in 1927.

Sir Richard Dales

Chairman

Sir Richard Dales joined the Diplomatic Service after graduating from Cambridge. Most of his postings were to Africa and Scandinavia, interspersed with posts at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, London. He was Ambassador to Norway from 1998 – 2002.

Aud Dixon

Vice-Chairman

I came to London from the Norwegian Foreign Office as a young girl to work in the Cultural Department of the Norwegian Embassy.  I had  assured my family that I would stay in London for 3 years, but soon after my arrival I met my future husband and stayed on.  I continued to work in the Embassy's Cultural Department for 11 years.

My husband, who is an architect, was interested in Scandinavian design and architecture, so we moved to Norway for 3 years.

On our return I took over from Signe Forsberg as Secretary to the Anglo-Norse Society, a position I held for 25 years.  After my retirement as Secretary, I  was elected Vice Chairman of the Society. I now live in Sussex, but through the Anglo-Norse I keep in touch with Norwegian cultural events.

Irene Garland

Society’s Secretary

I grew up in Norway, but moved to England when I married a Brit, and have lived in London ever since.

Through my 18 years working at the Norwegian Embassy dealing with Press and Cultural Affairs, I have kept in touch with Norway both culturally and linguistically.

Since leaving the Embassy I have been teaching a Master course in translation studies at the University of Surrey.

During the summer I teach at the Summer School of the University of Oslo where I am responsible for a Social Science Course; "Norwegian Life and Society" in addition to teaching Norwegian language to overseas students.

Tim Gilbert

Editor and Webmaster of http://www.anglo-norse.org.uk

London Editor of the in-house magazine Anglo-Norse Review

I first joined the Anglo-Norse Society in London in the 1980s and was a member for a couple of years before moving to Norway with my Norwegian born wife. When we returned to Britain my work kept me away from central London and I did not re-join for a few years. I now work near to Moorgate Station for a Nordic bank, from where I can easily travel to meetings at the Royal Norwegian Embassy. If there is no Council meeting before the main meeting I usually walk, contributing to my exercise if not to the cleanliness of the air I breathe.

After expressing opinions that we should have a web site and an overview of what should be on it I was invited to do what ever was needed.

For the Anglo-Norse Review we have now started doing all our own layout and file creation, sending a .pdf file to our printers. The results looked a bit amateur in the first such edition but I hope I have learnt from experience and that future editions will be just right. We prefer to receive articles electronically. We accept articles in English or Norwegian. Articles in Norwegian are translated before publishing.

The Council

There is a council that meets about six times a year to make decisions on the running of the Anglo-Norse Society and ensures that it keeps to its charitable aims. The trustees are among the members of the council.
